genU expands Big Day Out into Melbourne and Perth
genU’s much-loved Big Day Out has reached an exciting new milestone, expanding beyond its traditional home in Geelong to launch inaugural events in Melbourne and Perth, bringing hundreds of people together to celebrate inclusion, connection and community.
Having successfully expanded into Tasmania already, this expansion reflects genU’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for people living with disability to participate, connect and thrive in welcoming community environments.
In Melbourne, the Workplace Big Day Out welcomed participants and corporate volunteers for a day centred on teamwork, shared experiences and fun. A long-standing favourite in Geelong, the event made its debut in the Victorian capital with a sporting focus, featuring activities including Pickleball, Futsal, Basketball and other interactive games.
While there was no shortage of enthusiasm across the sporting program, the Zumba session quickly emerged as a crowd favourite, with participants embracing the opportunity to dance, connect and enjoy the energetic atmosphere.
The Melbourne event was made possible through the generous support of The Y, Victoria and the City of Melbourne, helping ensure the day remained free and accessible for everyone involved. The team from NOVA Entertainment also joined the celebrations, bringing enthusiasm, energy and a shared commitment to fostering genuinely inclusive communities.
Meanwhile, across the country in Western Australia, more than 200 genU clients and staff gathered at Optus Stadium for the inaugural WA Big Day Out.
The Australian-themed celebration marked a significant milestone for genU’s presence in the state, transforming one of Perth’s most iconic venues into a vibrant hub of music, dancing, entertainment and friendship.
Designed to celebrate people living with disability and encourage community participation, the Perth event showcased the power of inclusion in action. Guests enjoyed interactive activities, singalongs, dancing and entertainment throughout the day, creating a welcoming environment where everyone could feel valued, respected and included.
genU Chief Operating Officer Brooke Draper said the event embodied the organisation’s commitment to creating opportunities for connection and belonging.
“Big Day Out is all about creating a space where people feel welcomed, valued and celebrated,” Brooke said.
“The energy in the room was incredible, and seeing so many people enjoying themselves, making new connections and sharing in the experience made the day truly special.”
The overwhelmingly positive response from participants, families, staff and volunteers has reinforced the importance of initiatives like Big Day Out and their role in creating genuine opportunities for inclusion.
With successful events now taking place in Geelong, Melbourne and Perth and Hobart next, genU is continuing to grow one of its most celebrated community initiatives, expanding its reach and creating more opportunities for people to come together, form friendships and experience a true sense of belonging.
